Steamy Halloween

Posted in Crafty Liz, Holidays, Steampunk at 4:48 pm by wangeli

I got my Halloween outfit together! W00t for me. I used a few patterns to “mod” my way into my look – which I went for a Steampunk Rosie the robot maid. My outfit turned out incredibly steampunky, if not very maid-like. I needed a feather duster and didn’t have time to find one. It’s oddly hard to find a feather duster if that’s all you want.

So I used an Alice in Wonderland costume pattern for the dress. And I modded the heck out of a waist corset pattern to make the belt. Tye designed and painted the key. (lucky for me 🙂 ) Now all I need to do is figure out how to make the key move for DragonCon. And change out my dress (Cuz I’m not going to be a steam operated maid at D*C).
Here are the pics:

Halloween Outfit ideas

Posted in Crafty Liz, Holidays, Steampunk at 2:59 pm by wangeli

First of all – let me apologize for not posting the rest of my DragonCon stuff. I have to go through and delete a few hundred pictures before I have the memory space for more photo heavy posts. But here’s my latest project: Halloween is in the middle of the week this year…. and that means that it will be another Wear-Your-Costume-To-Work year. My new job is super into costumes, which means I need to put something together, but not so into the Nerdy-arts. So my usual steampunk stuff might be too much of a stretch. So I’ve decided to go as a windup maid. Mostly cuz Tye jumped the gun and made a windup key for me. This means that I need to paint the key he made, create a harness and then put together a dress. And it’s 5 days before Halloween…. So yeah – we’ll see how that works out.

Okay here’s my inspiration:

Why I wander at DragonCon

Posted in Dragon Con 2012, Steampunk at 2:06 pm by wangeli

So it’s hard to explain to people why I go to DragonCon…. if you haven’t been – you just don’t get it. However, this is my photo montage that explains why I go to DragonCon. And why I kinda wish that DragonCon went on all year long. Well not the drinking and late night antics…. I’d be dead if that went all year round.

Oh yeah – DragonCon…

Posted in Crafty Liz, Dragon Con 2012, Steampunk at 11:14 pm by wangeli

There is nothing like a few Tornado warnings to remind you about the fun things you did and forgot to blog about. Have I mentioned how chaotic moving? I lived out of boxes for a month, then move my cat down here and then went to DragonCon and came back with the boyfriend. Since then, it’s been packing, fixing things, breaking other things, finding things and shopping…. so much shopping and not for any of the fun things – like clothes, socks or shoes… Instead I have to buy shower curtains and hooks and wall anchors. Oh well – them the breaks…

So I know I owe you all a few posts about Dragon Con. For my first one, I’ll tell you how I wound up being a liar…. I was all sad that I couldn’t make by big DragonCon outfit because of a lack of $$. I was absolutely positive that I was just going to wear my old outfits and that was, well, depressing. But, as I was checking out Kato’s sight for a little steampunk inspiration, I found an outfit that she made and I was pretty sure I could replicate. So sure that I rushed out and bought a few yards of fabric to throw together some last minute outfits. And here they are:

My Still amazing Outfit (Part 2)

So I’ve been tacking together my pretty amazing train. And I hope that you’ve figured out that I’m making things up as I go along. But hey, how badly can this go?

I started my train project by buying a ton of fabric. All which I really like. And can’t make up my mind about. So I’m going to use it all. What do you mean that might not be a good idea. Pffh.

I stopped by my friend’s work (to show off my skillz) to get her opinion on my fabric choices. And to show off. And she did some magical thing and created a pretty amazing bustle. And now I want to figure out what she did to recreate it. Of course, I can’t remember – but we took some pictures. So I decided to guess. And here’s how it all turned out:

The Best Laid Plans

Normally by this point in time, I’d be blogging madly about the outfits I’m making for DragonCon and all of my big plans for that weekend. But instead – I moved to a different state.

I’m going to go to DragonCon, but the move has eaten up most of my money and all of my time – so it’s a reuse and redo D*C for me. And since I won’t have a hotel room – I can’t have 60 outfits to look all cute in. Even more sadness 😦

But don’t worry friends and fans, I’ll still have some posts about D*C, some outfits to show off and all of that other stuff… 🙂

And I’m steampunking my new apartment – mostly because my boyfriend doesn’t care what I do as long as I don’t spend him broke. So budget steampunking it is!

You can steampunk anything!

Dragon Con Outfits: Lady Mechanika

Posted in Dragon Con 2012, Steampunk at 8:19 pm by wangeli

Sorry it’s been so long since I’ve written anything… I bet you aren’t surprised, are you?

Did you know that the human body needs to consume half of their body weight in water? And soda, tea, coffee, etc doesn’t count. I wasn’t really aware of that – and if you know me, then you know I probably don’t consume that much in fluids much less in water. Well apparently, that can lead to some jenky health issues. But enough about that…

It’s never to soon to start planning outfits for DragonCon. In fact, I’m apparently, yet again getting a late start. But at least I’ve been thinking about it – that’s got to count for something.

Let’s start with my latest obsession first. So last year, I did a Girl Genius tribute outfit (I still love Girl Genius btw – I just don’t know if I want to try to die my hair red again – since it was unsuccessful before). I really enjoyed doing an outfit that other people could recognize and I like doing literary characters over movie characters. Enter my newest fav – Lady Mechanika. She’s a pretty kick ass detective with a mechanical arm and red eyes. And she rocks the bowler, vest combo. Don’t worry if you haven’t heard of her – she’s from a fairly new comic book that didn’t blow up until issue 2/3. Well it’s a pretty intimidating project to tackle that will take me far out of my comfort zone. But hey, at least I’m thinking about giving it a try!

So here are the reference pictures. It helps a ton that Joe Benitez (the comic’s creator) drew a ton of inspiration from Steampunk superstar Kato. So yeah, there are a few shots of her in this collection:

Dinner at the Edison

Posted in Lolz, Places I've Been, Steampunk, Vacation at 3:34 pm by wangeli

You can’t go to LA without having an evening at the Edison Bar. Well, you can – if you’re not really into steampunky stuff, well-made classic cocktails, an environment that never stops being amazing or a real people watching crowd. If none of that appeals – then go where ever you want to…

However, all of that is right up my alley. And my friends were kind enough to get dressed up and go with me. It would have been really awkward to go by myself… so Thanks Laura and Stacy! It was pretty excited, with completely over the top decor that included antique generators, bartenders with sleeve garters and a green fairy selling absinthe. I wish I could rave about our dinner, but I got the grilled cheese (because I really like grilled cheese…. and how can you screw up grilled cheese). Laura got the most amazing Shrimp and Grits however. And we all sat around drinking fancy cocktails and listening the the house band, feeling like classy ladies. All in all, it was a great night out!

Picture time! Let me set your expectations right now – I didn’t want turn on my flash and be “that touristy girl” all through our little Edison outing. So 1) there’s not a lot of pictures and 2) they look more than their usual level of awful. However – the main point is I had dinner at the Edison 🙂 and my little steam-powered heart is oh so happy 🙂

My pretty amazing Outfit (Part 1)

Posted in Crafty Liz, Edwardian Ball, Steampunk, Uncategorized at 6:46 pm by wangeli

If you’ve seen my post about my practice skirt, you’ve seen how I’d like my outfit to look. Well I spent my time off this weekend cranking out my actual skirt and I’m pretty happy with it. I ran out of the lace trimming, so I’ll have to get more. And I haven’t tacked it all of the ruffling into place yet (no point when I haven’t finished the bottom of the skirt). But it still looks good. I’m so happy, I even hemmed it.

I’d like to take all of the credit and say that my mad skillz are solely responsible for my lovely creation. But since I still can’t sew a straight line, I’ll have to give a good chunk of the credit to the pattern I’m using. Way to go flimsy paper pattern – you are as easy to use as you claim to be!

Next up is a detachable Bustled Train. By the way, I’m going off pattern for this, so I’m sure it will turn out like my usual mess. Just accepting reality here…

Practice makes Perfect

Posted in Crafty Liz, Edwardian Ball, Steampunk at 3:53 pm by wangeli

Not that I’m super excited about this upcoming Edwardian Ball thing, but instead of just jumping into making my outfit, I bought a few yards of muslim, a pattern or two and decided to make a practice skirt. You know that old sewing motto – Measure twice, cut once? Well I’m not that sort of girl. I’m more of the “Never measures and then is shocked when nothing turns out like it should” type. But I’m taking this project seriously – because I’m excited and I want to look good… And I’m more than a little worried about the whole LA thing… So yeah – I did a little practicing. I still didn’t measure, but at least I didn’t mess up anything too important 🙂

So here are a few pictures of the practice. All in all, I think it turned out pretty well. And I want you to know that I’m using 2 of my Christmas gifts from this year and one from a few years back – my dressmaker’s form, my brand new Chalk Pencil and (of course) my sewing machine. Thanks Rebecca, Jenn and Mom!
