Why I wander at DragonCon

Posted in Dragon Con 2012, Steampunk at 2:06 pm by wangeli

So it’s hard to explain to people why I go to DragonCon…. if you haven’t been – you just don’t get it. However, this is my photo montage that explains why I go to DragonCon. And why I kinda wish that DragonCon went on all year long. Well not the drinking and late night antics…. I’d be dead if that went all year round.

Oh yeah – DragonCon…

There is nothing like a few Tornado warnings to remind you about the fun things you did and forgot to blog about. Have I mentioned how chaotic moving? I lived out of boxes for a month, then move my cat down here and then went to DragonCon and came back with the boyfriend. Since then, it’s been packing, fixing things, breaking other things, finding things and shopping…. so much shopping and not for any of the fun things – like clothes, socks or shoes… Instead I have to buy shower curtains and hooks and wall anchors. Oh well – them the breaks…

So I know I owe you all a few posts about Dragon Con. For my first one, I’ll tell you how I wound up being a liar…. I was all sad that I couldn’t make by big DragonCon outfit because of a lack of $$. I was absolutely positive that I was just going to wear my old outfits and that was, well, depressing. But, as I was checking out Kato’s sight for a little steampunk inspiration, I found an outfit that she made and I was pretty sure I could replicate. So sure that I rushed out and bought a few yards of fabric to throw together some last minute outfits. And here they are:

The Best Laid Plans

Normally by this point in time, I’d be blogging madly about the outfits I’m making for DragonCon and all of my big plans for that weekend. But instead – I moved to a different state.

I’m going to go to DragonCon, but the move has eaten up most of my money and all of my time – so it’s a reuse and redo D*C for me. And since I won’t have a hotel room – I can’t have 60 outfits to look all cute in. Even more sadness 😦

But don’t worry friends and fans, I’ll still have some posts about D*C, some outfits to show off and all of that other stuff… 🙂

And I’m steampunking my new apartment – mostly because my boyfriend doesn’t care what I do as long as I don’t spend him broke. So budget steampunking it is!

You can steampunk anything!

Cage Dress – it’s happening, D*C 2012. It’s happening.

Posted in Crafty Liz, Dragon Con 2012 at 8:11 pm by wangeli

I think I’ve mentioned my fondness for Apocalypse Steampunk before, but just in case, here are my thoughts again.

What I think is really fascinating and fun and it wonder what you would use to make clothes if the Apocalypse had happened and there weren’t any factories or stores anymore. What would you use if all of the “clothes” were gone? Or if you didn’t feel bound to use fabric, what would catch your eye. Hence my paper skirt outfit. It probably helps that I’m crazy fond of Mad Max and movies like that… They provide a lot of inspiration.

So my next project is making a cage dress. I’ve gathered quite a few ideas and there was a design student on Cut Out + Keep that posted a really amazing outfit that I think I can really use as a template. Now to make it Apocalypse Punk, I plan to raid the hardware store to get supplies…. But before I start my shopping trip, here are my inspiration pictures. I’m leaning towards a mix of a hoop skirt and a corset and a cage dress.

Steampunking Disney…

Posted in Dragon Con 2012 at 3:35 pm by wangeli

I’ve been a little obsessed with the idea of doing a Disney outfit. Personally, I blame the internet for sending me things from artists like Claire Hummel or a Disney Princess/ Final fantasy mash up. I mean come on, how can a girl say no?

These aren’t outfits that I’m planning to do, this is definitely falling under the One Day, DragonCon… One Day list. However, I already look a lot like Pocahontas…. Just sayin’

I’ve always wanted a gang… at DragonCon

Posted in Dragon Con 2012 at 9:36 pm by wangeli

I grew up hearing that one person doing something weird looks crazy. But get a group of people together and do the same weird thing and you’ve got a club. And I’ve always wanted to be in a club… especially a club of weird people.

So how does that play into DragonCon? Well I’ve always wanted to do a group costume. Seriously… and the more awesome inspiration I gather from internet, the more I want to encourage (ie Force) my friends to join me in a costume.

Here are my two favorite outfits so far.
GoChaseRabbits on Etsy has an amazing group of skirts. Including a retro game skirt…which I have to be honest, would be amazing to run around wearing at DragonCon. She’s created a PacMan skirt, but there’s still Asteroids, Tetris, Space Invaders or even Pong out there… We could be amazing group of sexy girls in our 8 bit skirts.
Or, if we wanted to include boys, we could rock some pretty amazing outfits as a Zombie battling Mystery, INC. It already makes an amazing shirt, thanks to Travis Pitts and Threadless… And I think it would make an awesome outfit. It even has a back story, for times when we’re not all together, we can just say that the other people got lost to the horde…

So wanna be a part of my gang?

Another timely Dragon Con outfit idea

Posted in Dragon Con 2012 at 9:54 pm by wangeli

I am sorta sad about this costume idea. Last fall, the gaming world finally gave us a sequel to American McGee’s Alice. And if you haven’t seen clips of the game, this Alice is pretty bad ass… and her Wonderland is amazing! Oh yeah and she’s a crazed killer, but hey – what’s wrong with that?

So yeah, I’m a big fan of this Alice. And I’m an even bigger fan of American McGee, Alice: the Madness Returns. I loved all of her costumes, love love love them! But last year, I wasn’t ready to tackle a huge projects like an evil Alice in Wonderland costume. So I thought I’d make an outfit there year, even if it would have made more sense last year. Here are my reference pictures, though I’m pretty iffy on doing this costume. (however I totally have the hair for it…)

Dragon Con Outfits: Lady Mechanika

Posted in Dragon Con 2012, Steampunk at 8:19 pm by wangeli

Sorry it’s been so long since I’ve written anything… I bet you aren’t surprised, are you?

Did you know that the human body needs to consume half of their body weight in water? And soda, tea, coffee, etc doesn’t count. I wasn’t really aware of that – and if you know me, then you know I probably don’t consume that much in fluids much less in water. Well apparently, that can lead to some jenky health issues. But enough about that…

It’s never to soon to start planning outfits for DragonCon. In fact, I’m apparently, yet again getting a late start. But at least I’ve been thinking about it – that’s got to count for something.

Let’s start with my latest obsession first. So last year, I did a Girl Genius tribute outfit (I still love Girl Genius btw – I just don’t know if I want to try to die my hair red again – since it was unsuccessful before). I really enjoyed doing an outfit that other people could recognize and I like doing literary characters over movie characters. Enter my newest fav – Lady Mechanika. She’s a pretty kick ass detective with a mechanical arm and red eyes. And she rocks the bowler, vest combo. Don’t worry if you haven’t heard of her – she’s from a fairly new comic book that didn’t blow up until issue 2/3. Well it’s a pretty intimidating project to tackle that will take me far out of my comfort zone. But hey, at least I’m thinking about giving it a try!

So here are the reference pictures. It helps a ton that Joe Benitez (the comic’s creator) drew a ton of inspiration from Steampunk superstar Kato. So yeah, there are a few shots of her in this collection:
